Condition
An ovarian cyst is a sac filled with fluid or semisolid material that develops on or within one of the ovaries. The ovaries are small pelvic organs that create and store female hormones and egg cells.
Cysts come in a plethora of shapes and sizes. Majority of them are harmless. Ovulation causes functional cysts, which aren’t associated with any disease (the release of an egg from the ovary). Without therapy, functional cysts usually decrease with time, usually within 60 days.
Functional ovarian cysts, which are rather frequent, should not be confused with cysts that are caused by disease. Growths on the ovaries are also found in polycystic ovary syndrome and ovarian cancer. If you have any of the symptoms described in the symptoms section, contact your healthcare professional.
